Abstract
Sports journalism and mass communication occupy a central role in shaping how societies understand sport, athletes,
and related cultural meanings. Over the last three decades the field has undergone dramatic transformations driven by digital
platforms, social media, changes in broadcasting and rights models, and evolving norms of ethics and professional practice.
This paper provides a thematic synthesis of the literature and industry reporting about sports journalism and mass
communication, examining historical development, digital disruption, audience dynamics, professional ethics, commercial
pressures, and future directions. It draws on interdisciplinary scholarship and recent industry analyses to offer
recommendations for researchers, educators, and practitioners.
