Digital Health Adoption Among Gig Workers in India: Opportunities, Barriers, and Policy Pathways

Abstract
India’s dynamic economy has seen a remarkable rise in the gig sector, fueled by apps like Uber, Swiggy, Zomato, and Rapido, transforming traditional work landscapes. With an anticipated growth of the gig workforce from 7.7 million in 2020-21 to 23.5 million by 2029-30, this shift emphasizes the urgent need for effective health solutions.

Digital health innovations, particularly Personal Health Informatics (PHI), offer essential tools for self-monitoring and proactive care tailored to the unique needs of gig workers. Despite the rapid evolution of digital health infrastructure in India, many gig workers face significant barriers, such as low health literacy, economic constraints, and privacy concerns, which hinder the adoption of PHI.

The economic implications are clear: a simplified cost-benefit analysis suggests that PHI initiatives for gig workers can yield a favorable return on investment through preventive care and reduced downtime. Ultimately, fostering a healthier gig workforce will require collaborative efforts involving platforms, government agencies, and health-tech firms to deliver accessible and tailored health solutions.
